What you can expect

Cairo food tour - This city is a fascinating enigma to most, a place criss-crossed with sun-baked boulevards and ancient winding back alleys - colourful textiles billow in the dusty Sahara winds with the soothing sound of the call to prayer and huddled locals throw backgammon dice amongst wafting shisha smoke and dark high-poured coffee.

“Perfect for start of your trip I had an incredible time and am so happy that the tour operator kept this tour even though I was the only one. My tour guide, Loay, was very professional and detailed in explaining what was in every dish, how it was cooked, and if needed, the why of the dish. This tour takes you off the tourist path where the local eat. There's a wide array of foods and sweets to try. Definitely a must do!”

“Unknown guide Disappointing Experience for the Price The experience was not very good and did not match the price we paid. The tour guide was very nice, but the food that was served was extremely limited, cheap, and not filling at all. They also combined my wife and me with two foreign guests, and the four of us had to share one single dish.”

“Awesome tour! Nada, our tour guide was lovely and very knowledgeable. She took us around old Cairo, down hidden alleys and completely off the beaten path. Without this tour, I wouldn't have thought to explore these parts of Cairo, it was wonderful. The dishes were tasty and some had flavours I had never had before. I highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to get to know Cairo :)”

“Fantastic tour Our guide Nada was very knowledgeable and helpful. She went out of her way to meet us when we were late. She also made sure we met up with our Uber to get home. All the places we went to were very interesting as was the area we were in. I would highly recommend this tour.”

“Great tour! Nada was an amazing guide for our group. We tried many great, authentic Egyptian dishes. She was very informative and lively. I would highly suggest her as a guide for this tour!”

“Nada was our guide, and we had a very enjoyable food tour. We tasted many daily dishes in Cairo, including falafl with baba ghanough, koshray, karkadeh, ajwa, kabab with kofta, turkish coffee, and rice pudding. It was a fulfilling night. Nada also led us walking through the streets where nearly no foreign travellers visit. It is quite adventurous and interesting to experience. Nada also shared how to write our names in Arabic, and we had fun and joy.”

“It was a wonderful experience! We were taken into the streets of Cairo, where we learned about local food and drinks, and even received a brief Egyptian lesson. Finally, we were given some spices we'd used on the trip, so we could take the lingering fragrance home with us! It was truly satisfying! Some of us were a little late, which delayed us, but the guide was very patient and waited for us. The whole trip was a joy!”

“Mona was a great guide. She took us through Old Cairo to spots we probably never would have found on our own. We tried so much good food - definitely come to the tour hungry. Mona also gave us some great historical insights for the neighborhood that we were in and answered all of the questions we had about modern day and historical Egypt. This tour was a great introduction to Egyptian food - highly recommend!”

“If you come to Cairo, you have to do it. It's a wonderful experience. You'll taste authentic cuisine and enjoy unique experiences. Our guide, Loay, is excellent. He always made sure we tried every dish, and if you didn't like something, he always found alternatives. He's a very attentive and friendly person, always on hand from the beginning to the end of the tour.”

“This was a truly authentic Egyptian food experience! Far from the typical tourist tours, this walk lets you discover the real, everyday flavors of Cairo. Strolling through the old streets, Mrs. Nada guided us through several stops in a safe and enjoyable way. The locals were very friendly and welcoming. Mrs. Nada knew the area very well and made us feel comfortable and safe at all times. She even waited until the end to make sure we got our transport back to the hotel. The food we tried was absolutely delicious, and we also learned some history along the way. This is the second tour I’ve taken with A Chef’s Tour — first in Colombia and now in Egypt — and both have been exceptional!”

“My first impression of the tour is that the photos shown on the website bear no resemblance to the experience. The photos and the website give me completely different vibes. However, we enjoyed the experience of walking the streets of Old Cairo and connecting with its people. It's not a recommended tour if you have a problem with hygiene, because I doubt the places you visit are food-safe. However, you have the opportunity to see Cairo like no other tourist has. We liked it, although towards the end, the guide seemed a little tired and his enthusiasm had dropped. I recommend doing it at the beginning of your trip, so you get a better understanding of the country's gastronomy.”

“"A prior tour and traffic made me miss the start time for this tour. The meeting point was also a bit hectic. Nada was willing to wait and worked to find me in the crowded meeting point, which I greatly appreciate. Nada was very knowledgeable of the area's history and had great food suggestions. Nada also highlighted streets with various unique shops without adding any pressure for the attendees to purchase anything. She also was willing to help the other attendees and myself get to an area for Uber/rideshare requests at the end."”

“Really worth going! Our guide was very nice, explained everything in a very nice manner! Old Cairo is not touristy, which you notice while walking through the area. We got plenty of food to try, everything freshly prepred. Places we might would have not entered. The people were all nice, we had no unsecure feelings at all. Be prepared to enter another culture, so lot of thinks are very different but great to try and explore. The only thing might be that the guide walkes very quickly, you need to take care not to loose hi while walking. You get a lot for the price, great experience!”

“Authentic Egyptian food at every stop, away from the touristy spots. Our guide was excellent, Louay is an Egyptologist foodie with a passion for sharing his culture. The falafel was amazing, and you must try the Egyptian “whisky!” Would absolutely recommend a tour with Louay anytime you are in Cairo. Five stars.”

“Great tour, even better tour guide. Best tour we have done in Egypt Our guide Mona was amazing. She took us to as many local eateries as we could possibly go to before we exploded! She also organised for everything that we wanted to save for later to take home. The tour was crafted perfectly as a “locals” food tour, not just the touristy area- and we could not recommend Mona enough. She was caring, thoughtful, protective of us, she was incredibly knowledgeable and was even an Egyptologist so she answered all the questions we had. And to top off our experience she sent us home with some local treats and helped us order an uber and made sure we got home safe. She was an absolute gem!”

“The food tour with Nada Ashraf was so much fun! She went over and abound helping us get a ride to the location when no Ubers were available. We walked to many locations with all kinds of food, drinks, and desserts. There was no stop I didn’t like! Great food, great guide, and a wonderful time. I highly recommend! Thank you Nada :)”

“A Chef's Tour here is not A Chef's Tour there ... Having done "A Chef's Tour" in Kuala Lumpur and coming away well fed and well educated I hoped for the same experience in Cairo. Our tour started late at 5pm (instead of 4pm) as requested by the guide as one of the restaurants would be open till then. That was fine and we didn't actually get started till 530pm due Cairo traffic delaying a few guests. Whilst our guide did keep the tour informative the actual food though was an odd assortment of super dry shortbread biscuits, cold cinnamon porridge, extremely salty pickles, raw spinach like dip with relief provided by iced hibiscus tea. The only food of real substance was a falafel pocket, a small noodle dish and a quarter mince meat pocket bread. Unfortunately no smokey kebabs or lamb as shown in the advertisement weren't offered. The tour finished at 820pm. I asked the guide if that was it expecting to run till at least 9pm or the advertised 4 hours but alas it concluded short on time and food. We were organising ourselves an Uber to get back to out hotel but the guide said the taxi driver would do it for the same price .... we checked getting into the the taxi but on getting to the hotel the driver tried to extract more money even after we had tipped him but thats not on the guide, just get Uber is my recommendation.”
